It has not always been this way. The original Ford Model T, the tipping-point product for cars that started production in 1908, had one lever and one gauge in the dashboard. It was a simple and purposeful design that did not distract the driver from operating the car safely.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

In reality, we as drivers and car owners are living in a world of information overload. Do I really need to know my Revolutions Per Minute (RPMs) or even my speed at all times? Probably not. Do I need to know the battery level or engine temperature? Not likely. And yet, all this information is displayed persistently in my dashboard. During my commute I would prefer a blank dashboard that lights up only when I need it (for example, if my car is overheating or if I am approaching a curve too quickly and should slow down).

Fuck this noise, I’m out.

Most tech sites will not be able to understand cars until you bring Tesla into the subject. Them they’ll praise it endlessly.

Also, speaking of distractions, I wonder what happens if you show the author this...

If someone gets distracted from the gauges in their car they probably shouldn’t be driving in the first place.

Yeah, that’s what did it for me as well. Idiot wants “Zen Mode” while driving...

THEN FUCKING PAY ATTENTION TO TRAFFIC AND IGNORE YOUR GAWDDAMN DASH YOU DUMB ASSHOLE!

If that is too much effort then take a fucking taxi.

i like how the bentley blower is the yardstick. I wonder why endurance racers would like to know information about their car, huh. weird.

just get a base model early 90’s economy car. you get.... a speedometer and idiot lights. there you go.

Seriously, it’s really frustrating. I love the Model S and would do nasty things for and to a P90D, but for fuck’s sake, the praying at the alter of Musk/Tesla is infuriating.

Ars just did a very good article/review of the new Lamborghini Huracan. What are like half a dozen comments about?

“Yawn, another gas engine? How quaint and boring.”

I just want to strangle them through their computer screen.

This is exactly what is wrong with drivers nowadays. People think of driving as a chore that must be done blindly, not as operating a machine . Seriously people, you are the pilot responsible for maneuvering a 2-ton vehicle in a shared space with other users. This is an activity that should demand your uninterrupted attention. You SHOULD know and monitor that sort of information AT ALL TIMES, and NOT your facebook status update.

Autonomous cars can’t come soon enough.

Speedo is also frequently less than useful.

If you’re not alone, you should match your speed to that of others.

If you are alone, you can just go whatever speed you want anyway (barring cameras).

Now, stuff like a tach, oil temp, water temp, voltage, manifold pressure... that is all useful information about the state of your vehicle.

The basic premise is sound; there is too much info in our cars. But then this idiot goes into talking about the Model T, jets, and Zen and it all gets utterly pretentious and silly.

Do we need to have access to our music and Nav and Facebook and Twatter on the dash? No.

Should we still always be able to see RPMs, engine temp, fuel levels, and current speed? Yeah. Otherwise you’re not driving, you’re a passenger.

He makes a few good points. Too many gauges and too much information can be as useless as no information at all, because you can’t find what you need quickly. There are a few “dashboards” in my DashCommand app that are like that. Fortunately I have the choice of simply not using them. Good UI design is making the program/app/dashboard as usable as possible, giving you what you need in a clear, concise manner, with no additional clutter.

The rest of the article is BS. I want gauges that tell me everything is working correctly, rather than idiot lights that only tell me after something’s gone horribly wrong. I once ran a Miata out of oil (yes, that was stupid) and never once got an oil light on the dashboard.

Kinja'd!!!

I think my BRZ’s dashboard is almost perfect. Tach front and center, like a Porsche, with a built-in digital speedometer. Fuel and coolant temp gauges to the right. If it was up to me, I’d eliminate the redundant analog speedometer to the left of the tach, and replace it with oil temp and pressure gauges, mirror images of the fuel and coolant temp gauges on the right. Everything else can be idiot lights, just like they are now.

And “Zen mode?” GTFO.

Or when there’s a review on the tech in say, an AMG Mercedes, and you’ll have comments saying that we don’t need that much power and we’re only hurting our wallets by driving them…

But yet more power in the Model S is always good.

The basic premise of having too much info thrown at drivers is completely correct. Everything beyond that is pretentious bullshit from an idiot who needs to stop driving and take a taxi.

Also, I need your feedback in my other post this morning please. Thanks.

Another example.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the instrument panel of an F-104 Starfighter. I got to sit in one of these at a museum, and it was friggin awesome.

As I sat there pretending to be Chuck Yeager, what really struck me about the design of the cockpit was how much it was like a sports car. The most important gauges are front and center for easy reference. My hands fell onto the control stick and throttle naturally, and I’m not even a pilot. The less important the gauge or control, or the less frequently you use it, the further off to the side it was. It was very intelligently designed.

The F-104 has way more gauges and controls than a car (if only my BRZ had an M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon and a pair of Sidewinder missles), but intelligent design makes it quite usable. I know information overload can happen to pilots in more complex modern aircraft.

Its an article from Techcrunch. As soon as I saw the source, I could tell you what the author was going to say. Unless you’re a gearhead, most people could give two shits about the information shown. There is a reason idiot lights are pervasive, their non-threatening to the casual user.

What a shitshow. Modern dashboards with configurable screens or gauges can do that without taking up too much space, while providing all the information an intelligent driver could want, or none. BMW tried the “simple” no buttons approach with the first I-drive, and it was universally regarded as heinous and terrible. Screens don’t age well. That dude is a tool, and should buy a 15 year old Saab. They have a “night mode” that disables every gauge and console lamp but the speedometer because, you know, born from jets.
